Civic issues
Topics getting the most attention in Maui County public meetings, ranked by how frequently they come up.
Neighborhood connectivity and cul-de-sacs
CPAC Chair Rob Weltman argued cul-de-sac connectivity is a life-safety issue post-fire, letting people walk or bike out of dead-end neighborhoods. The language survives as Action 1.15, and the committee wants cul-de-sacs specifically named there.
Disaster Case Management Program Transition to County Control
Speakers split on priorities: one urged adding mental health and wellness funding to the budget; another fire survivor countered that housing, not counseling, is what survivors actually need.
Holiday Closures
Maui County offices are closed for the Fourth of July, so if you need permits, records, or other in-person services, you'll have to wait until they reopen. It's a standard holiday shutdown—emergency services aren't affected.
The Independent Nomination Board experiment
Three years in, members are frustrated the INB hasn't filled board vacancies or fixed quorum problems, and Paltin says Lahaina's rebuilding is stuck waiting. Some, including the INB chair and Dick Mayer, want it fixed and kept; the committee deferred a decision.
County Office Closures
All Maui County offices and parks are closed Monday, so your usual errands and beach plans need a backup. If you were counting on in-person county services or a park day, shift it to another day.
Komohana Hale Apartments Rebuild
$2 million in insurance proceeds recognized for pre-development work to rebuild the fire-damaged Komohana Hale Apartments, with Group 70 retained as vendor and a FEMA deadline looming.
